Indians in Brazil. 5. Another history
2000 / 17min. / Hunikui (Kaxinawá) / Pankararu

Was Brazil discovered or was it invaded? All the Native People are unanimous in claiming that their country was invaded, because they were already there. Depending on the point of view, there are various versions of Brazilian History. The workbooks of Indigenous schools in Acre, for example, divide the history in four periods: the period of the hut, before Cabral’s arrival; the period of escaping, when Indians were murdered for their land; the period of captivity, when they were used as slaves to tap rubber trees; the period of their rights, when they finally conquered their rights to own land and pursue their own culture.
